Dziak, Marusewski and Bigaj win Scratch Match Play Championships; Abram Triumphant in the Lesso
The 2023 indivdual season wrapped up with the finals of the Scratch Match Play Championships in each class, as well as year-long handicap George Lesso Match Play Championship.
Keith Dziak defeated Paul Schein, Jr. to win the Dan Fitzgibbons "A" Class division of the Scratch Match Play Championship, making him the "King" of match play at South Park. This is the 3rd South Park GC "Major" for Dziak after he won the 2021 George Lesso Championship and 2014 Scratch Match Play Championship. Congratulations to "King" Keith!
Mike Marusewski won Mike Kane "B" Class Match Play Championship defeating Jim Quinn in the finals after a nip-and-tuck affair. Tom Bigaj prevailed in the Bobby Miller "C" Class Match Play Championship over Joe Gawlak.
In the season-long George Lesso Handicap Match Play Championship Joe Abram prevailed over Tom Bigaj in a close match. This is Abram's first South Park "Major" in more than 20 years after many near misses during recent years.
Masocco, Storrey, Deering and Pulinski win Club Championship Titles
Gary Masocco stormed through a crowded leaderboard to capture his 5th Club Championship, shooting an impressive 1 over par 141 for 36 holes, including a great 2 under 68 for the final round, besting runner-up Keith Dziak by 6 strokes. Mark Poloncarz, Joe Abram and Paul Schein, Jr. finished in a tie for third.
Todd Storrey defeated a hard charging Mike Daniels by 2 strokes to win the B class title at 161 to 163, with Jimmy Quinn finsihing third at 164.
Tom Deering finally won his first C Class Title in strong fashion, besting Chris Escott by 8 strokes, with Joe Gawlak coming in third.
Finally, Ray Pulinksi defeated Chuck Griesinger on the 2nd hole of a playoff in the Super Seniors Division. Last year's Super Seniors winner Mike Ciesla finished third. You can read all the scores by going here: HERE.
Masocco, Langan, Marusewski, Ciesla win Hall of Fame; Marusewski Makes Hole-In-One; Dan Fitzgibbions Inducted into the Hall of Fame
Gary Masocco was the big winner of today's South Park Golf Club Hall of Fame Tournament, and when we say big winner we mean it. Masocco shot a 9 under par 61, the lowest score ever recorded in a competition. 10 birdies and 1 bogey resulted in the best score ever recorded in the Tournament since the modified stableford format was first used 30 years ago.
Masocco's stableford score of 38 gave him an easy 7 point victory in A Class over Jason Surdyke, who shot an impressive round of 5 under 65. Keith Dziak finished in third.
JJ Langan won B Class with a score of 18, 1 point ahead of Ken Gawel and 2 ahead of Dan Welch.
Mike Marusewski had a stellar day on the links, recording his first hole-in-one on the 100 yard 4th hole, his 13th of the day, and winning C Class with a great score of 24, 2 points ahead of Randy Tesmer and Don Rogers. Congratulations Michael Marusewski!
Mike Ciesla won the 9 hole Super Senior Category by 1 stroke over Steve Scanlon and Pat McCann.
Finally, Dan Fitzgibbons was inducted into the South Park Golf Club Hall of Fame for his outstanding record of play and meritorious service to the club. Dan won a combined 7 major South Park titles, which includes 3 club championships, and was club president for a number of years. Accepting Dan's Hall of Fame plaque was his widow Denise and his brother Terry.
Poles take the 2023 Ed Krypel-Jim Schaefer Polish v. Irish Challenge Match
The results are in and the Polish squad wins the 2023 Ed Krypel / Jim Schaefer Polish v. Irish Challenge Match! The low 10 Polish scores added up to 676 and the Irish was 690.
Gary Masocco won A Class shooting 65-2-63. Mike Szczerbiak won B with a 74-10-64, and Tom Deering won C Class with a 80-17-63. You can review all the scores: HERE.
McNamara, Schein, Sr., Dorobiala and Pulinski Memorial Day Champs
The 2023 Memorial Day Tournament was a great success. Sean McNamara led all players carding a 71-4-67 to win A Class and the overall. Keith Dziak finished 2nd in A Class, and Mark Poloncarz, Joe Abram and Tom Wasielewski finished in a tie for third, with Poloncarz taking the prize on a match of cards.
Paul Schein, Sr. captured B Class with fine a 77-8-69. Eric Wilson finished 2nd in B, and Matt Sullivan third.
In C Class, Don Dorobiala was tops with a score of 84-15-69. Joe Gawlak was second and Mike Marusewski finished third.
Ray Pulinksi won the 9 hole Super Senior class with a strong 43-7-36. Steve Scanlonn was second and Jerry Kuwik third.
