SOUTH PARK G.C WINS 2006 CHALLENGE CUP AGAINST THE BUFFALO G.C. 9.5 POINTS 8.5 POINTS

On Sunday September 10, 2006, in the closest match in the history of the Challenge Cup, the 12 members of the South Park G.C. team defeated a strong contingent from the Buffalo Golf Club 9.5 points to 8.5 points. With this victory the 2 clubs have each won the Challenge Cup twice: Buffalo G.C. in 2003 & 2004 and South Park in 2005 and 2006

South Park led after the first day 5.5 points to .5 points after winning 5 out of 6 2-man best ball matches and halving the other. On the final day the Buffalo G.C. squad waged a ferocious comback, winning 8 out of a possible 12 points, but the 4 points picked up by South Park on Sunday was just enough to ensure victory and retention of the coveted Challenge Cup for another year.

The South Park squad was led by Sean McNamara and Tom Quinn who each won both of their matches. Liam Friedman, Jim Connors & Pat Quinn each recorded 1.5 points, and Mark Poloncarz, Mike Daniels, Marty Cyna, Bob Miller, Fran Conmy and Chuck Griesinger all recorded a point, with Dave Helmbrecht getting a half a point in the 2-man portion.

Next year the final day of the Challenge Cup will be held at the South Park G.C., meaning the boys from SP should have the edge.

September 8, 2006: Miller, Nostrant, & Connors Win President's Cup

Jim Miller won his third A Class President's Cup Title when he bested former club champ Sean McNamara 1 up. Miller shot a solid round of 2 over par 72. It was Miller's third title in the past 6 years.

In "B" Class, Jerry Nostrant entered the President's Cup as the first seed and showed his match play mettle by winning a close match against Steve Scanlon.

In "C" Class, Larry Connors perservered over Marty Cyna on the 5th extra hole of sudden death, a club record! Connors and Cyna each birdied the 2nd and 4th holes in sudden death in what was surely the best match in recent memory.

September 4, 2006: Poloncarz, McDonald & Cyna Win Scratch Match Play Championships; Poloncarz & Gulino win George Lesso Classic

Mark Poloncarz was declared the king of match play again at South Park after he won his 6th Individual Scratch Match Play Championship during the past 7 years. Poloncarz defeated Sean McNamara in the finals 3 and 2 when he scorched the South Park links with an opening nine of 4 under par 31 which included an eagle on the 5th hole. McNamara made it close by shooting under par himself, but he could not catch up from Poloncarz hot start.

In "B" Class, new member Steve McDonald show nerves of steel in holding off Dave Helmbrecht in a tight match 1 up. Both competitors played well, each breaking 80, and each had to beat some of the best of "B" Class just to make the finals.

In "C" Class, Marty Cyna capped of a great year by winning that division after he won the stroke play competition earlier in the year. Cyna beat Fran Conmy in the final 3 & 2.

In the George Lesso 2-Man Best Ball Match Play Classic, Mark Poloncarz & Mike Gulino captured their third title in 4 years when they beat Tom Kozaczka and Frank Vogel 5 up. Poloncarz and Gulino shot an opening nine of 32 in poor conditions and where able to hold off the runners up the rest of the way.

August, 2006: Liam Friedman Wins 2006 South Park Golf Club Championship

The hottest golfer in Western New York is also the newest club champion at the South Park Golf Club as 19 year old Lackawanna native Liam Friedman, a sophomore at Drexel University in Philadelphia, captured his first club championship on Sunday July 30th. Friedman shot a fantastic seven under par score of 133 over the 36 holes contested at the venerable South Park links, the second lowest score ever recorded in the championship. His play garnered him an 8 stroke victory over his nearest competitor Sean McNamara, who finished with a strong score of his own at 1 over par for 36 holes of play.

Showing his stellar play was no fluke, the next day Friedman captured the low medalist honors at the Buffalo District Golf Association’s Individual Amateur qualifier by shooting a 1 over par 73 at the extremely difficult Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora. Making this achievement even more impressive is that it was the first time Friedman ever saw the course! Due to his continuing great play Friedman will certainly be one of the favorites at the Amateur Championship, to be conducted next week at the Niagara Falls Country Club.

In the “B” Class, Jim Connors came through as the champ for 2006 after many near misses in the past. Connors shot a great round of 3 over par 73 on championship Sunday, which when combined with his first round score of 82 was good enough for a 3 stroke victory over defending “B” Class champion Mike Daniels. First round leader Darin Tesmer finished in a tie for third with Pat Quinn and Mark Guarino.

Marty Cyna showed his earlier hole-in-one this year wasn’t all luck when he won his first “C” Class championship by 2 strokes over Fran Conmy, with Matt Sullivan finishing third.

The members of the golf club like to thank the many local golf fans who came out on the final day of the tournament to watch the play, they were treated to some great golf, especially from the new champ, as well as the grounds staff at the South Park Golf Course for the excellent condition of the course.
