NINTH HOLE
The Ninth Hole is a hard dogleg right 340 yard par 4 from the back right tee box, or about 325-340 yards from the regular tee that plays straight forward. The left side of the fairway is guarded by a line of mature pine trees and the fairway bunker on the 2nd hole. The right side is all trees, and further right is the Erie County Botanical Gardens, not a good spot to be playing an approach.
As can be seen from the picture below, while the green is fairly flat it is guarded by 2 grass bunkers in the front and then a 3 foot drop-off in the back. Go too long and your approach will end up in Frederick Law Olmsted's famous "Bog Garden" of South Park: a beautiful place to visit and see flowers and shrubs, but not a good place to try to save par. Not an overly difficult hole as long as you hit the fairway. If you miss your tee shot right a bogey or worse is often the result.
While South Park is not a long course, it also is not a "Bombers" course. Precision shots are required to navigate around SP. Golfers playing South Park for the first time are usually amazed at how high they scored on a short course. Members often leave the driver in the bag on some of the short par 4s and instead hit irons that place their tee ball in the correct spot in the fairway.
If you hit it long and straight you will score well, but if you miss the fairways you will be scrambling for par or worse. South Park is a thinking man's course that has not changed much over time, except the ever-present trees of the South Park Arboretum keep growing higher and higher. The members of the South Park Golf Club hope you have enjoyed this tour of South Park, and that you visit us soon.
