FIFTH AND SIXTH HOLES
The Fifth Hole, seen from the fairway in the picture to the right, is the shortest par 4 on the course, measuring only 270 yards. However, with out-of-bounds down the entire right side and South Park Lake down the left, any score is possible.
The hole is known for its eagles and birdies, as well as numerous double bogeys. The Fifth hole requires a straight tee shot to avoid the trouble. If you hit the fairway, or perhaps even the green, a birdie is very possible, but if you miss the fairway you are usually reteeing or going to the drop area.
The fifth hole green has been expanded in the recent years and almost doubled in size. Two large humps guard the right and left side of the green and can make for a very delicate pitch shot or putt if you end up on the wrong side of the humps.
Many a club championship has been decided when one player makes a birdie 3 and the other a double bogey 6 or worse on this short, but demanding hole.
The Sixth hole is the longest par 4 on the course measuring 430 yards from the tee and is the number 1 handicap hole. It is a dogleg left that hugs the shoreline of South Park Lake from tee to green and has a row of mature trees guarding the right side of the fairway.
As you can see from the photo to the right, you can shorten your approach by attempting to cut the dogleg, but if you miss left you usually will find the lake, or at best the high grass and bushes guarding the lake.
Any second shot pulled left will find South Park Lake, and even if you hit the green in 2 a par cannot be conceded as the green is in the shape of an upside-down bowl.
In actuality, the green is five separate greens: short right, short left, center, back right and back left. If you hit the wrong portion of the green a tough curling 2 putt awaits you. In the picture to the left you can see the slope of the green by how the flagstick seems to have been put in crooked and is leaning to its left - it wasn't, the hole is cut on a severe slope on the left side. A par is always a great score on the Sixth Hole.
