Unclaimed County Cash
January 18, 2006

It was November 15th of last year, Erie County passes the 2006 budget and a host of fees. However, for tax payers, that is where it stopped. Mark Poloncarz/Erie County Comptroller-" If it was anticipated that it would have started on January first than each day that passes we lose additional revenue."

Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz is raising red flags in a letter to the legislature. The E-911 surcharge, county clerk fees and probation and parole fees could have brought in nearly $1.6 million for the county. Instead in one month we could lose more than $133,000.

Barry Weinstein/(R) Minority Leader-" The revenue initiaves I think the legislature actually approved but it requires state approval? Steve Barber/Reporter- "Is it that we didn't follow through? What happened? Barry-" I can't answer that... This was the first I'd heard about the state needing to approve these. I thought they were a given when we approved the budget."

Steve Barber/Reporter-" We could have had real money hear what happened? Ned Regan/Stability Authority Chairman-"You have to go to the state legislature and ask em what they're process is. Steve-" But did we drop the ball in this process? Ned-" No of course not. We were on the phone with the people and you heard those reports."

Steve Barber/Reporter-" What happened with those bills? Did you guys ever receive word that those needed to be acted on? Dale Volker/(R) State Senator-" We never received any such word and of course you have... to have legislation to enact these fees and taxes and so forth and what we're requiring is you send us the resolutions and then we could sponsor bills in both houses. We not only never got a chance to sponsor a bill, we never got the resolutions."
