ECC Audit Turns Up Questions

Mike Desmond

BUFFALO 2006-07-20 Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz is raising some questions about the perks of office of ECC President William Mariani.

The issues turned up during an audit of the college.

Although the college is an independent agency, the county can audit the books because it contributes financial support to the college.

Poloncarz says there is a problem with the contractual status of Mariani, who takes extensive comp time.

Poloncarz says there is no proof that he is entitled to it.

"We've noted that because the contract that he is under is multiple documents that do not neccessarily, in clear terms spell out what his terms of employment are, we recommend that Mr. Mariani and the Board of Trustees sit down and draft a brand new contract...clarifying what the terms are," Poloncarz told WNED News.

Mariani did not return a phone call seeking comment about the situation.

Poloncarz says overall, the audit shows that ECC is doing a good job financially.
