Comptroller Blasts Giambra Administration

Apr 11, 2006 - Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz says the Giambra administration leaked confidential document.

Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz says through an audit they found the Giambra administration has grossly mismanaged cell phones and wireless devices. Poloncarz is also very upset about another matter. He says the Giambra administration leaked the confidential audit about the cell phone usage so they could spin it.

Strong words from Poloncarz, who said in a news conference they found out last night that the Giambra administration allegedly gave the audit to a media outlet when a reporter called the comptroller's office asking questions about it. He says an audit does not become public until an exit conference with the involved parties, which was scheduled for next week. Poloncarz says leaking the document violates local law, and he is calling on the Giambra administration to disclose who allegedly leaked the report.

Here are some of the findings in the audit. It says county employees made long distance calls and roaming calls. At least 84 county employees have two or more wireless devices. Some county employees downloaded games and ringtones, which cost extra.

Poloncarz also said the most significant finding: two employees who were laid off in march of 2005 still have county cell phones that are paid for with taxpayer dollars.
