Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz says he knows county lawmakers had no choice but to approve a compromise sales tax sharing plan with towns and cities. But he says he's not sure how the county will trim an additional $12-million from the 2007 budget--over and above the $40-million shortfall leaders are anticipating.
Legislators agreed to share $12.5 million with county towns and cities, under the threat that state lawmakers would not approve the temporary "8th penny" sales tax without such an agreement. The amount was a compromise whittled down from an earlier proposal to share $30-million.
