BUFFALO, NY – Today, New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi released his final audit and report on the state of Erie County’s budget crisis and confirmed the present budget deficit to be 118 million dollars. Comptroller Hevesi’s report concluded that Erie County Executive Joel Giambra’s fiscal mismanagement of our county’s finances was a major factor in Erie County’s budget disaster. His years of reckless budgeting have led the county to the brink of bankruptcy.

Now that we know the true picture of Erie County’s rapidly deteriorating finances, the time has come for our elected officials to work together to solve our fiscal mess. However, instead of admitting his mistakes and sitting down with the comptroller’s office and the legislature to solve this dilemma, Giambra is spending thousands of dollars on a media campaign to convince residents of Erie County that we need to pay for his mismanagement. What we need now are not more commercials, but real leadership from those we sent to elected office.

If Erie County is to move forward we need to get past the constant finger pointing and get to the task of righting the county’s sinking fiscal ship. We need a county executive, comptroller and legislature that will work together to craft a reasonable budget for difficult times. The people of Erie County also deserve a comptroller who will stand up to the County Executive and his reckless budgets by promoting fiscal discipline and a common sense approach to county government.

Because I do not have any political, professional or social ties to Joel Giambra, I can be a truly independent watchdog for the residents of Erie County. As comptroller, I will be an advocate of the people and make sure their tax dollars are spent wisely. I will open the lines of communication that have been cut in county hall and work together to end the budget crisis. Most importantly, I will stand up to anyone in county government, regardless of political affiliation, to expose reckless budgets loaded with gimmicks similar to the ones we have seen lately.

After we have solved this fiscal crisis, I will properly use the tools and powers delegated to me as comptroller to make sure Erie County is never faced with such a fiscal nightmare again. The people of Erie County are looking for someone to step forward and demonstrate strong leadership during trying times. And I look forward during the coming months of this campaign to discussing these issues with the people of Erie County and suggesting realistic, pragmatic solutions to our current crisis.
