Arguably the most important local election in the past decade will take place in November. At this critical juncture, the region's future fiscal health is dependent upon a rebirth of sorts in county government.
The Giambra administration's emphasis on patronage over integrity produced a comptroller's office with a direct pipeline filled with fat no-bid contracts to party sympathizers from New York City. With independence and accountability forsaken for cronyism, the safeguard function of the county comptroller's office was rendered impotent. Problems were exposed after it was too late, red-green budgets resulted and we find ourselves in the worst financial mess of our lifetime.
Of all the candidates running for comptroller, Mark Poloncarz appears to be the Giambra antidote. The 10-point plan published on his Web site emphasizes increased auditing, better debt management and an insistent oversight of county government. Concepts such as independence, auditing and public session reviews are emphasized.
Our current fiscal situation requires a comptroller of strength and independence. The determination to effect change comes through clearly in Poloncarz's published vision and public appearances.
