Comptroller to Audit Homeland Security Funds

8/6/2006

The Erie County comptroller says he will audit the county's use of homeland security money for heavy-duty vehicles, security systems, consultants, computer upgrades and employees related to domestic security and terror response.

The county, Buffalo and some of the county's larger towns have been awarded $28.3 million through the various state and federal security programs and spent $11.6 million so far, according to government records.

"Based upon information that may come to light during our audit, we reserve the right to expand our audit to other areas pertaining to homeland security," Comptroller Mark. C Poloncarz said in a letter alerting Kevin Comerford, commissioner of central police services, to the audit.
