Don't knock county officials for questioning beach project

5/17/2006

Erie County Parks Commissioner Angelo Sedita announced that Bennett and Wendt beaches in the Town of Evans will remain closed this year as a result of a developer pulling out of the Wendt Beach Park project. Media coverage suggesting that Comptroller Mark Poloncarz and Legislator Robert Reynolds killed the project was inaccurate.

Since the county budget crisis, county officials have been regularly criticized for doing a poor job. Poloncarz and Reynolds put the people ahead of politics and asked the developer some tough questions. The developer could have answered the questions and kept the project moving forward, but instead opted to withdraw. These officials should be recognized for doing a good job.

On the other hand, Sedita could have met with Evans officials to explore ways to open the beaches instead of just announcing the beaches were closed. County residents pay the price again. County officials should develop a plan to renovate Wendt Beach Park with a combination of public and private funding. While projects on Buffalo's waterfront are considered more glamorous, the shoreline does not stop at the city line.

Communities north and south of the city should be considered for a fair share of the Power Authority money. Parks and beaches will also attract tourists into the area. Western New York needs regional planning that includes developing public access and attractions along our entire waterfront.
