Punishment demanded for whoever aired audit
4/12/2006
Erie County Comptroller Mark C. Poloncarz on Tuesday called on County Executive Joel A. Giambra to find and discipline the worker who provided an advance copy of his audit on the county's cell phone use to The Buffalo News.
Poloncarz said he believes a member of the county executive's staff was seeking favorable coverage of a report that found dozens of cell phones remain in the names of ex-county employees, and that county oversight of nearly 700 wireless devices is almost non-existent. The report was detailed in Tuesday's News.
Deputy County Executive Bruce L. Fisher had responded by saying the audit will be a useful management tool in helping better track its cell phones and BlackBerry devices.
"The Giambra administration's decision to leak this draft document to a media outlet violates generally accepted auditing practices and county precedent," Poloncarz said during a news conference. He said release of the draft violated county law.
